Sal Masekela

Sal born Selema Mabena Masekela, son to the legendary South African musician Hugh Masekela know to us as the OG face of action sports. Since I can remember Sal has been the person to welcome you to the most epic action sport events, Creating so much hype and excitement that you can hardly waiting to see the event unfold.

Sal started back in 1992 when he was an intern at Transworld Publications which gave him exposure to the snow, skate and surfing worlds. He dapped into the NBA scene on ESPN and also the world of tabloid entertainment with his show The Daily 10, during this time is when he established himself in the action sport world hosting both X Games and the Winter X Games on ESPN for 13 years of his career but left that to join the Red Bull Media House in 2012 and running with the Red Bull Signature series.

Sal also explores his musical talent with a more low-key project called Alekesam (his surname in reverse) dropping legendary song that can be described as surfing R&B. Masekela for the most part not wanting to add his “Sal Masekela” brand to the music and using his already big fan base to launch his music really shows his passion to create true and real music. In this each song has meaning and really touches you in way best describe by Johnny Depp “music touches us emotionally where words alone can’t”

Flexing his producing muscles Sal created VICE World of Sports that gets into the culture and behind the scene telling heart moving stories, crossing political and cultural boundaries reaching the real people and how they are all connected through sport. His efforts awared with 2017 Producers Guild of America award for “Outstanding Sports Program” and earning the title as an award winning producer.

Then adding to his accomplishments Sal has always been set to give back with his foundation/community Stoked and they are on a mission to inspire teens who are the most vulnerable, to believe in themselves through action sports showing them they are capable of greatness. Stoked attracting mentors in New York and Los Angeles. from film directors to marketing professionals, who also have a passion for snowboarding, skateboarding or surfing, take teens on day trips outside of the city and show them how to ride.

Sal always following his passion, doing what he loves and adding his own flavour to his commentary, journalism, producing and music make him once of the most inspirational people to show you how you can really achieve legendary status by doing what you love.
